This project will replace the existing fire protection system in the Historic Hangar B11108 to comply with all applicable codes, standards and regulations. The design shall include any interconnected systems (i.e. fire sprinkler system, fire alarm, and mass notifications systems) which do not comply with codes, standards, and regulations. design criteria for new Fire Protection Systems to be in compliance with the LSC, NFC, UFC design standards, and NFPA standards, as well as local codes and standards.

One challenge the project presented was that the existing facility does not meet current egress codes and standards.  Another challenge the project presented was mitigating fire risk.

To mitigate fire risks the Value Team brainstormed various alternative ideas such as the use of an ignitable liquid floor drain system, using an early warning flame detection system to reduce response time, and a recommendation to complete a Fire Risk Assessment to determine the extent of necessary replacement of the existing system and the overall fire protection approach for the hangar.

The egress challenges facing this project were due to insufficient standoff distance between a paint booth and wall.  The design being reviewed by the Value Team planned to relocate the paint booth to meet this egress requirement.  This relocation of the paint booth would create additional challenges to the project due to the decarbonization executive order mandating that if the paint booth were to be relocated it must be completely electrified.  The Value Team identified alternative solutions to meet egress codes and standards while not requiring the relocation of the paint booth which resulted in the implementation of a concept to modifying the paint booth plenum space to increase the egress corridor width.  This single concept resulted in a initial cost avoidance to the project of approximately 25%!
